Activate spoken notifications on your device, check brakes and tires, and even create a playlist before a long trip to avoid handling the radio while driving. These are some simple but important measures we suggest to promote self-care during your travels.
During the year-end holidays, it is common to see an increase in traffic on streets and highways, which in turn raises the risk of traffic accidents caused by multiple factors: stress and traffic congestion, distracted driving, and even negligence by both drivers and pedestrians.
For example, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), one of the leading causes of child and youth mortality in Latin America and the Caribbean is traffic accidents. In 2022 alone, countries in the region recorded 17 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
In this context, among the recommendations, it is especially important to maintain defensive, safe, and conscious driving to avoid accidents and ensure a safe and worry-free holiday season for everyone. Additionally, we suggest:
- Always wear your seatbelt and respect speed limits. According to WHO data, wearing a seatbelt can reduce the risk of death by up to 50%.
- If you plan to travel, make sure all your vehicle documents are up to date.
- Avoid handling the radio while driving. Create a playlist before your trip.
- Keep both hands on the wheel, and avoid eating or drinking while driving.
- Avoid using mobile devices while driving; activate spoken notifications on your device and radio.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol. The International Road Traffic and Accident Database warns that 21.8% of global traffic accident fatalities are related to individuals who consumed alcohol prior to their trip.
- Check the brakes, tires, and ensure you have a spare tire, a jack, and a lug wrench.
- Keep a first aid kit in your vehicle.
- Always have a fire extinguisher in your car and ensure it is in good condition.
- For long trips, carry a flashlight with batteries, a whistle, maps, non-perishable food, and water in your car.
With these tips, we want to ensure your trip is safe and enjoyable, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: enjoying good times with your loved ones. Happy holidays from the Inchcape Americas team!
