Generator Mechanic

SUMMARY

The Generator Diesel Mechanic performs diagnoses, repairs, services, and modification work within OEM specification, etc. on Diesel and Gas-powered generator equipment as required.   Work may be completed in the workshop or at the customer’s work site, as required.     

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Workshop and on-site diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repairs of Diesel and Gas-powered Generators.
• Determine the extent of needed repair; inspect old parts to determine the cause of mechanical failure and determine parts needed
• Overhaul, repair, troubleshoot, controllers, electrical boards, gen-alternator ends, computerized and electronic ignition systems, and engines.
• Diagnose & repair electronically controlled devices on power shovels and other heavy equipment
• Use a wide variety of test equipment and shop tools
• Overhaul exhaust systems, and repair exhaust after treatment systems if applicable
• Make emergency repairs in the field
• Perform routine maintenance and servicing of generator and trailer if applicable.
• Complete work-orders and time cards daily
• Complete jobs in accordance with the quoted labor hour
• Maintain workshop in a clean, organized, and safe manner. Also if assigned Service truck same term apply.
• Properly maintain company tool inventory
• Provide excellent customer service to clients

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, unless otherwise specified.  Typical ways to obtain these knowledge and abilities include the following:

• Education
  • Technical or trade school certification in mechanical services or related instruction
• Experience
  • Two to Three years’ experience in the maintenance and servicing of Generators, includes Controller/gen-alternator/engine repair work or formal training in Controller/gen-alternator/ engine repairs.
• Licensure
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain DBIDS/Rapid Gate base access
• Tools of the Trade
  • Incumbents must provide the basic required tools upon employment and any additional required tools within twelve months of employment.  The Company will provide basic heavy equipment workshop tools as deemed necessary by management

  • Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it
  • Performing routine maintenance on generator equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed
  • Monitoring voltage fluctuation, amperages, hertz, engine RPM, adequate grounding, or other indicators to make sure Generator equipment is working properly
  • Controlling operations of generator equipment or systems
  • Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do the job at hand.
  • Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance
  • Managing one’s own time
  • Use Generator diagnostic tool and laptop for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
• Abilities
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance and simple repairs on generator equipment, including gas and diesel-powered Generators
  • The use of hand and power tools
  • Ability to read and understand technical service manuals
  • Able to read and understand electrical schematic diagrams for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions
  • Recognize and report defects or malfunctions upon inspections
  • Able to problem solve and think outside the box to get the job done

• The physical requirements of this position involve very heavy work, which includes exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds or more constantly to move objects.
• The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.
• The worker should be able to hear and distinguish various sounds, such as the voices of co-workers in noisy environments and sounds of operating equipment.
• The ability to distinguish colors, such as color-coded wire and the color of fluids
• The ability to distinguish temperatures of equipment, to avoid burns
• Ability to perform tasks that require manual dexterity, such as welding, assembling small parts, and pouring liquids into receptacles.
